Simple Bow

The Simple Hair Bow:
http://www.twentythreeohone.com/2011/04/hair-bow.html
Supplies:
-Scissors
-Hot Glue Gun
-Jewelry Wire
-Fray Check
-Hair Clip
-Wax Paper
-Ruler or Yardstick
-30 inch long piece of 1 1/2 inch wide ribbon
-8 inch long piece of 1 1/2 inch wide ribbon

Step 1: Drape the longest piece of ribbon over your hand, wrapping twice so that the ends of the ribbon face opposite directions.

Step 2: Place the folded ribbon on a flat surface.

Step 3: Gather and pinch the center of the ribbon to create a bow. (Sorry about the blurry picture....I looked after I had finished the bow.) Wrap the center of the bow with jewelry wire to hold in place. Don't worry if it doesn't look perfect right away, you can pull and mess with the ribbon once the wire is in place to get it looking like a bow.

Step 4: Take the 8" piece of ribbon and fold one half over the other.

Step 5: Create a knot by pulling the top half up through the center loop.

Step 6: Place and hot glue the knot over the center wired part of the hair bow.  Wrap ribbon around the back, hot glue, and trim off the excess ribbon.

Step 7: Hot glue the top of an alligator clip or hair clip and attach the hair bow. Be sure to place wax paper in the hair clip so you don't glue it shut!

Step 8: The last and probably most important step is to fray check the ends of the bow. We don't want unraveled ribbon, people. Fray check is your new bestie.

Ta-da! A cute and simple hair bow.

The 3-Layered Hair Bow (my favorite)

If you like huge hair bows, this bow is for you!

Supplies:
-Scissors
-Hot Glue Gun
-Jewelry Wire
-Fray Check
-Hair Clip
-Wax Paper
-Ruler or Yardstick
- 3, 19 inch long pieces of 1 1/2 inch wide ribbon
-8 inch long piece of 1 1/2 inch wide ribbon

Step 1: Take one piece of 19" long ribbon.  Overlap as shown below.

Step 2: Pinch the center of the ribbon and hold in place by wrapping jewelry wire around the middle.

Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the remaining 19" pieces of ribbon. Your bows should look like this when you finish.

Step 4: Stack the 3 bows on top of each other. I usually stack them in a clockwise direction so that they don't lay directly on top of each other. Wrap jewelry wire around the center of all 3 bows.

Step 5: Repeat Steps 4-8 in the above directions to make a center knot and complete the bow.

And you should get something like this when you're done!

Love :).

Boutique Bow

Since I’ve never been one for keeping secrets (especially not ones that can save people lots of $$) here’s a quick tutorial on how to make a hair bow. I hope that some of y’all will find this useful (Dena, I hope you don’t lose any business by me doing this!). If you want to share the love with other moms feel free to link.
Supply list:
- 1 yard of ribbon of your choice & width, unwired grosgrain does best (I like ebay for fun unique ribbon, I’ve even bought from Bobo in China, but it did take a couple weeks for the ribbon to get here)
- a couple inches of coordinating ribbon in narrow width (1/4″) to wrap around center of bow
- fine gauge wire
- hot glue gun
- hair clip of choice (Alligator/pinch clip or barrette clip for older girls. Pinch clips can be found at Sally’s Beauty Supplystores or Ebay and barrette clips can be found at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby.)
- wax paper (not just to keep a clean surface but also for attaching the completed bow to the clip)
- lighter
- if you tend to be anal you can lightly starch your ribbon and with a cool/warm iron press it… it will make for a better looking bow! I did starch my ribbon prior to starting this bow.Step 1)
Take the ribbon (I’m using 1 1/2″ ribbon in this tutorial) and make the shape shown above, always be sure to keep the “right side” (ie- printed side up in center). Make sure the long side of the ribbon is in the back with the longer side of the ribbon hanging down to the left.
Step 2)
Bring the long side of the ribbon up over the existing ribbon so that the long side of the ribbon is now up and to the right.
Step 3)
Take the long side of the ribbon (that is up and to the right) and bring it back down BEHIND the top piece of ribbon in the center of the bow. The long piece will now be hanging down towards the center of the bow.
Step 4)
Take the piece of ribbon that was hanging down towards the center/left bottom and bring it to the upper left side of the bow. This would be a good time to make any adjustments to your bow to be sure all the loops are even.
Step 5)Turn your bow sideways (horizontal) and in the center carefully fold the bow (see picture above). For wider ribbon you should fold it so that there are 3 peaks in the center.
Step 6)
Using your fine gauge wire tightly wrap the wire around the center of the bow and twist it on the back side of the bow and trim off the long pieces. Press the wire down so it’s not sharp.
Step 7)

Singe one end of the smaller ribbon (I always use a long candle lighter– fray check is expensive and I’ve found it to not work as well) to prevent fraying and starting on the back of the bow where the wire is tightened and cut off, glue one end of your small ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around the center of the bow. Trim off excess ribbon and singe again and glue down on back of ribbon. It’s important to completely finish the bow prior to attaching it to the clip. Especially for the alligator clips. Some clips are made with the center ribbon wrapped around the entire clip and this causes the clip to not close entirely and the clip won’t stay in as well. This way the “seal” on the clip is tight.
Step 8)

Tear off a piece of the wax paper and fold it over several times. Clip the alligator clip to the wax paper and load the clip (the angled side) up with hot glue. And stick your bow to the glue covered clip. Allow the glue to dry completely and then peel away the wax paper that is in the clip. Trimming away any excess that can be seen from the front of the bow. This should leave a very smooth and even surface inside the clip so that it will hold the hair! Trim and singe the ends of the ribbon with the lighter… be careful though… just barely get the end of the ribbon near the flame… the ribbon will turn black if burnt.

No slip bow

First of all I'd like to say that no, this post does not mean that baby Meyer is a girl. Actually, at our 18 week appointment baby decided to play hide & seek so we still don't know the gender! We're hoping to find out at our next appointment which will be at 22 weeks.

But in the mean time I have been making these bow hair clips as gifts... since I'm pretty convinced that my baby is a boy. {I don't know why... it's just in my brain. Maybe because I know about 8 other girls pregnant with boys right now!}

I found the original tutorial here {at make-it-love-it... great blog!} and changed just a few things. She uses drawer liners to make a non-slip gripper on the hair clips which worked great!

Supplies
Hot glue gun
Ribbon
Hair Clips
Lighter
Scissors
Non-slip grip material

The original post recommends drawer liner, but I couldn't find any less than $10 and I knew I'd only need a little bit, so I got this set of 4 gripper pads at the dollar tree for $1. I only used about a half of one to make over 20 clips. I also got my clips at Sallys.

First, start by cutting your outer ribbon into 4 inch strips {depending on the size of your clips}. Singe the edges of the ribbon to prevent fraying.
Next, follow instructions below:
For the bows, I made 2 different types. I can't decide which one I like better. See below for tutorials on both styles of bows!

For the layered look:

For the criss-crossed look:

When you're all done, it's time to add the no-slip grip material. The original tutorial had you glue a piece of felt to the back side of the gripper before gluing it to the clip, but for some reason I didn't do that {I think I forgot}. I just glued the gripper it straight onto the clip and it turned out just fine, but I may try the felt sometime in the future.
I had so much cute ribbon in my stash that I made a bunch!! They were so simple & look great!

Some of the layered bows I just did one layer of ribbon instead of two {see the ones on the right} and I love them both!

I also used some of this glittery ribbon from Michaels, although I would only suggest this kind for an older girl since babies can have such sensitive little heads.
Now, I really need to find some cute boy accessories to make if baby M is a boy!! Send any ideas my way because I have scowered pinterest with no luck!
